The satellite of our planet reflecting sunlight, has always been a subject of admiration. The idea that man will ever be able to walk on the surface of the moon inspired awe. The era of space exploration, which was the result of an arms race between the two superpowers USA and the USSR led to the landing of man on the moon. This event is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of mankind. However, since 1972 the flight to earth’s satellite was suspended. Today the world is again obsessed with the Moon and many countries have announced plans of its development. Recently, scientists have made the world’s first “unified geological map of the moon”, created in a digital format. The map will be available to anyone online.
A Map Of The Moon
The moon contains resources that are not on the Ground. But to study them, first as best you can to learn about the moon. To solve this problem, researchers from the U.S. geological survey (USGS), in cooperation with experts from NASA has made a detailed map of the moon in unprecedented detail. The world’s first geological map of the moon made up of six different moon maps, some of which were created in the era of the flight of “Apollo.” Each color on a Single geological map of the moon identificeret individual rocks or sediments, which consist of craters, pools and even ancient lava fields. Let me remind you that over 40% of the visible side of the moon is the sea – the dark areas, covered with frozen lava deposits.
According to the portal Science Daily, the map was no easy task. One of the main problems was the discrepancy between the different lunar maps. Their edges were not quite accurate, the markings sometimes were distinguished or description and the age or breed is not the same. However, all the work was worth it, because the new moon map is not only a collage of data gathered over years of flying the Apollo missions but new data from the myriads of lunar missions, as well as information gathered by space satellites.
The surface area of the moon equal to 58 million square kilometers. Larger than the area of Africa, but smaller than the area of Asia.
Thus, data on the topography of the moon and the region around the equator was able to collect with help of lunar Orbiter the Japanese aerospace exploration Agency SELENE (Selenological and Engineering Explorer), and the topography of the North and South poles complements the data obtained using the Lunar Orbiter LaserNASA.
As suggested by the developers of the unified geological map of the moon will bring together all available information about the body in one simple database. Most notably, a new map of the moon will be available online to each Internet user and not only to the scientific community. Also do not forget about the earthly geologists have no doubt that it will be very interesting to study the geological features of the moon. According to the authors, the differences in the various maps of the mission “Apollo” arose from differing interpretations of the research groups who have created them. It is possible that two different teams might come to different conclusions looking at the same picture. To resolve discrepancies, the developers of the unified geological map of the moon studied all the six cards of the era of the flight of Apollo, and also have used modern data. It is noteworthy that in dealing with complex issues such as the age of the craters, the most useful were the latest data. All because of clearer images allowed the scientists to work out the details, which it was impossible to know in the past.
In General, the developers have compiled all the early maps of the moon's surface, and supplemented them with new data and redraw the map, while retaining all previous interpretations and data from past observations.
Mountains of the moon
Given the increased interest in the moon and the intentions of individual States to erect on the moon’s surface a lunar base, in the preparation of a unified geological map, the scientists were able to develop a description of the stratigraphy – rock layers of Earth’s satellite. Thanks to the stratigraphy in all the previous maps of the moon and now age and a description of the breeds are the same.
