The study, conducted by scientists from Wuhan, 19.7% of patients with COVID-19 had a confirmed ischemic heart disease. This confirms that the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is especially dangerous for people with heart diseases.
Coronary heart disease in people infected with COVID-19, was an independent factor influencing their mortality. It is worth noting that among the studied patients with COVID-19 the mortality rate was 51.2% for those who have heart disease, compared with 4.5% of those who have no heart problems.
The results of the study were published by a group of teachers headed by Dr. Shaobo Shi Renmin hospital of Wuhan University.
“Based on current research results hs-Tnl and ECG in a subgroup of patients suffering from COVID-19, we can only assess the severity of heart damage. While there is no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 can damage the heart, further studies are needed,” said Dr. Shaobo Shea.
The study involved 416 patients admitted to the hospital in the period from 20 January to 10 February of the current year.
“A few words of warning: this study was conducted on patients who were hospitalized, and it may not apply to all people who have had a positive result on COVID-19. In addition, in patients with myocardial injury was multiple organ failure, so part of the heart may not be specific but may be part of the distraction of the disease which also affected this body,” said Dr. Mohammad Madjid from UTHealth in Houston.
