NASA managed to establish contact with the probe Voyager 2 after the mysterious failure

Launched from Cape Canaveral in 1977, the probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have been in space now for 42 years. Together, these robotic devices have transformed our understanding of the Solar system, and now reveal unprecedented information about the interstellar space beyond the sphere of influence of the Sun. However, on 28 January, NASA reported about the problems of Voyager 2, the reasons of which nothing was known. Right now the unit is 18.4 billion km from Earth, according to the publication Inverse with a link to the official account of the NASA Voyager in Twitter, was able to get back in line and resumed the mission to gather scientific data about the Solar system and the interstellar space beyond.

What happened with Voyager 2?

February 5 in his Twitter account, NASA announced that the Voyager 2 camera not only stable, but also returned to his scientific mission. At the moment the relationship between him and the Ground is set up and works fine. Recall that the unit faced the problem on January 28, and the connection with him was lost for unknown reasons. Then, Voyager 2 has cut off the power and software designed for automatic protection of a spacecraft. Before the probe was rotated 360 degrees to calibrate one of the instruments on Board. However, the rotation did not take place. As a result, two of its systems — both of which consume much energy — worked simultaneously. The most likely problem according to researchers is that the spacecraft had used too much power, which caused the triggering of the software. The software automatically disables scientific instruments of Voyager 2, when there is an overload to save energy.

At the time of this writing, NASA has not confirmed or denied whether or not it happened. Only time will tell whether we will get ever an answer to the question about what went wrong. But while we can all be sure that the mission Voyager 2 is still far from complete. If all goes well, he will have another five years of life, and it means that for another five years the unit will collect valuable scientific data from the same region of space, in another study which we can’t.
