Scientists have developed an effective method for the treatment of pain

Each of us from time to time pain. We don’t so often think about what it is and how many types of pain exists. What is nociceptive pain?

The physiological type of pain is a normal reaction of the organism to potential harm and serves to protect against emerging threats. This pain can be worn acute or chronic, depending on the individual case and causes.

Scientists klassificeret physical pain into two subtypes — somatic and visceral pain. Somatic physical pain caused due to activation of pain receptors, which are located on the body surface or musculoskeletal tissue. This type of pain, typically localized in a certain area and is often worse during physical activity, but subsides during rest.

Visceral pain refers to pain that arises as a result of activation of pain receptors located in internal organs. This type of pain is usually described as a feeling of deep pressure, which is not localized in a certain part of the body.

What is neuropathic pain?

Neuropathic pain, unlike physical pain caused by damage to neuronsinvolved in the propagation of electrical signals that send messages of pain from receptors to the brain. The main difference is the origin of the pain is not due to the reaction to physical damage. This type of pain is usually described as sharp, shooting pain that is often quite intense. There are different causes of nerve damage and, as a result of, arising neuropathic pain, including can be caused by certain infections, diabetes, or certain surgical procedures.

What is psychogenic pain?

This informal term sometimes used to describe pain that is associated with some mental disorders. Talking about psychogenic pain, when a person suffers anxiety, depression or is experiencing severe stress, which can negatively affect the body in the future and even cause pain.

What is acute, chronic or breakthrough pain?

In addition to physical and neuropathic pain, there is a method for classifying type of pain based on its duration. So, there are acute, chronic or breakthrough pain. Under sharp pain, the researchers mean a normal and temporary reaction of the body, warning the body about injury. Chronic pain is often defined as any pain in the body, which lasts for 12 weeks or more. Breakthrough pain refers to acute episodes of pain that occur while taking pain medications for the treatment of chronic pain.

How stem cells will help cure the pain?

Recently, scientists have developed the first method of pain treatment using the stem cells of a person who provides lasting relief of chronic pain in mishy. The result is achieved in one step and does not have any side effects. As the researchers write in a paper published in the scientific journal Pain, if the treatment proves successful in humans, this could be a major breakthrough in the development of new non-opioid and non-addictive drugs. Recall that at present there are no effective treatments for pain, especially devastating neuropathic pain caused by nerve injury.

The study used human induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSC) derived from bone marrow, to create pain cells in the laboratory. IPSC are cells that can develop into different types of cells in the body at an early age and in the process of growth. During work scientists put the IPS into the spinal cord of mice suffering from neuropathic pain caused by damage or disease that affects the nervous system. As the authors of the study, the neuronal stem cells contributed to long-term pain relief without side effects.
