Found the remains of previously unknown species of sharks

Millions of years ago on our planet lived not only the huge dinosaurs, but many other animals. Among them were even sharks, skeletons which are located in various corners of the Earth. Recently in Mexico were found the bones of Megalodon, which is considered the scariest shark in the history. It was a pretty interesting discovery, but in 2010 researchers from the American state of Illinois were able to dig up the bones of the shark, which was about 91 million years. Ten years later the bones of an ancient predator was able to put together and it turned out that this species of science wasunknown. What new species is so interesting to scientists?

According to the newspaper NewsWise, bones of ancient sharks was discovered in one of the agricultural areas of the city of Tipton that is in the American state of Kansas. The researchers Quenxe Shimada and Michael Everhart managed to dig up the 134 tooth 64 of the vertebra and 23 scales of the ancient inhabitants of the seas and oceans. Initially, the researchers suggested that they came across the bones of a shark Cretodus crassidens species, but none was found the teeth did not match those that were of this species. It was then that scientists realized that we are dealing with a brand new for the science shark.

In the United States have discovered a new species of sharks

A new species of shark has been called Cretodus houghtonorum in honor of Keith and Deborah Houghton, who are the owners of the land on which was discovered the remains. They voluntarily donated the find to the Museum of science.

We believe that further cooperation between paleontologists and landowners is essential for improving our understanding of the geologic history of Kansas, and the Earth as a whole — shared by scientists.

Despite the absence of many other bones, scientists were able to learn about the ancient predator lot of interesting things. For example, the length of his body was an impressive 6.8 m and he was pretty big at birth — even then, the length could be about 1.2 meters. It is also known that the shark was very slow. After examining the remains, scientists have decided to include it in a group of Lamniformes, which also includes the modern white and tiger sharks.

Researchers are very interested in the fact that together with the bones of a previously unknown predator also found the teeth of ancient sharks Salicornia. Also they were able to detect fragments of ancient gerodontology fins of fish that were very similar in appearance to predators. According to scientists, they found the shark mainly fed on small hybodonts and died after the attack of large Salicornia.

Scientists studying ancient species of sharks are able to tell a lot of both the past and the future of our planet. In particular, researchers will be able to thoroughly examine what role they played in the past. Also, importantly, they can find out what will become of our planet if sharks suddenly disappear.

To find out, scientists need to conduct a lot of research. But they already know how it will change our lives in the complete disappearance of bees. About how the lack of melliferous insects will cause the collapse of the coffee industry and the meat industry, you can read in our special article.
