Our regular readers know about the dangers of sleep deprivation and the benefits of healthy and sound sleep. In the end, sleep is very important for a normal life and to neglect it completely not worth it. However, safe is daily for a long period of sleep? A new study published in the European Heart Journal revealed that insufficient amount of sleep and an excess can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and even premature death. In other words, sleep should be in moderation. But how much?
What is the danger of too long a dream?
Chuanshi van from McMaster University in Ontario (Canada) and his team studied the sleep habits of more than 116 thousand subjects aged 35 to 70 years. These subjects were also included in the PURE (Prospective urban and rural study). The research of Dr. WAN’s scientists have included information on physical activity of the subjects, their habits and lifestyle, socio-economic status of the subjects, diet, use of medications, and family history of chronic diseases. PURE observation lasted for 8 years.
In the course of the study for 8 years in total 4 365 suffered a heart attack or stroke, and 4 381 people died. According to the results of van those who regularly slept more than 8 hours are more likely to have acquired cardiovascular diseases or prematurely died. In other words, the risk of premature death or cardiovascular disease for them were on average 5% higher than for those who slept the recommended 8 hours. The chances of premature death and acquiring cardiovascular disease among those who slept 9 to 10 hours was above 17%, and people whose sleep on a regular basis accounted for more than 10 hours, risked by 41% more than others.
How much you need to sleep?
For anybody not a secret that modern society is suffering from sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep, as warned by the Centers for control and prevention of diseases (CDC) increases the risk of developing chronic diseases, such as depression, type II diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. In addition, the study found 9 percent higher risk of the aforementioned outcomes among those who slept 6 hours or less. However, the authors of the study warn that this increase was not statistically significant. Note that according to the results of the study, the expected optimal duration of sleep for adults is six to eight hours. However, by themselves these findings do not mean that sleeping more 8 hours is the direct cause of premature death and cardiovascular disease. The study only found a link between excessive sleep, cardiovascular disease and early death. Also do not forget that circadian rhythms — the so-called biological clock that regulates the operation of the whole body, including a predisposition to owls and early risers, each person works differently.
