The turtles started to eat the plastic. What to do with it?

Today the pollution of the Earth with plastic exceeded the worst expectations of scientists. Over 90% of seabird species are already eating plastic. This happens because at least 10% of all produced plastic products are in the oceans. So, seahorses often take cotton buds for algae, and in Thailand not so long ago found a dead whale in the stomach of which was 8 kg of plastic waste. Now this problem caught sea turtles.

They eat sea turtles?

Sea turtles are great swimmers and divers. These slow-moving reptiles can be found in tropical and some subtropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. The greatest number of sea turtles inhabit the Caribbean sea, on the coasts of Indonesia, Australia and Mexico. They can also be found in the Seychelles and some coasts of the USA.

Among sea turtles especially are two families: Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. The family Cheloniidae is divided into six types, and Dermochelyidae consists of only one.

Despite the fact that in some species there are separate food cravings, mainly sea turtles feed on crustaceans, algae, fish and shellfish. These floating reptiles like coral reefs. Unfortunately, quite often it is there that they find the plastic mistaken for food.

Harmful than plastic?

The results of the latest research has shown that black bags for rubbish, fragments of fishing ropes and plastic mesh products to knock the turtles off. On the shores of Cyprus, researchers have found turtles that were entangled in fishing nets. Scientists researched 19 turtles. Plastic debris found in the stomach of each of them. One of the turtles by mistake ate 183 pieces of plastic.

Scientists believe that the small turtles eat more plastic. This is due to the fact that they are not as experienced as large turtles, and therefore unable to take food for what it is not. Experts drew attention to the turtles after a number of previous studies have shown that leatherback turtles eat plastic, like jellyfish.

The researchers note that the choice of food sea turtles are guided by the size, color and shape of food. It showed the results of a recent study.Comparing plastic found in the stomach of turtles from plastic waste on the beaches and coasts has become evident the fact that turtles prefer plastic filament green or black.

According to scientists, you must have an idea of what kind of plastic are consumed sea turtles. The data obtained is able to motivate the public and especially the manufacturers of plastic products to consume and produce less plastic. Otherwise we will simply lose the many species living with us on the same planet.

Note that the situation of plastic garbage so critical that some of the stones were disguised as plastic, and the air we breathe there is of microplastics.

In fact, each of us can contribute to the pollution of the planet. Sorting garbage along with a smaller consumption of plastic products can give life sea turtle, whale and even seahorses.
