Remember the movie “Armageddon” with Bruce Willis in the lead role? As famously his character was handled on the drill to plant a bomb inside of the asteroid malicious, threatening to kill all life on Earth! In real life, however his cunning plan to crash would have failed, the asteroid would hit the Earth, and we with you did not live happily ever after. And all this happened because the device for drilling of the asteroid shown in the film simply would not work in low gravity. And if it worked, it would be nothing more than attraction for the rotation of astronauts in outer space.
If so, then why are scientists from the Vienna University serious about not just drill, but to settle inside him for the first colonists?

Have you ever wondered what are the costs of one asteroid? It would seem that you can find in the gray-black stone from space, which is sometimes aimlessly flies over the Ground or hangs out somewhere between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. However, the cost of one medium asteroid can reach more than 10 trillion dollars! The fact that the majority of known objects in the asteroid belt, consists of iron, cobalt, platinum and Nickel.
In consideration of this, scientists from the University of Vienna consider the idea of creating the first settlement inside one of the asteroids located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The natural body of the asteroid could prevent the exposure to cosmic radiation, and the beginning of the development of mineral deposits would more than recoup such an ambitious project.
As we drill an asteroid
As mentioned earlier, none of the drill rig working under the conditions of gravity, would not be able to function in low gravity. In order to solve this problem, scientists have proposed a very original version of the work in such extreme conditions. According to calculations, future researchers will have to find an asteroid, able to rotate around its axis. This feature will provide the ability to use the centrifugal force of the asteroid for the installation of mining equipment.
If the “right” asteroid there, it will mean the beginning of an era of getting minerals no longer on Earth but in outer space. In addition, this asteroid will be able to serve not just the mining base, but also a real home for the first colonists. Stony case around the station will become a reliable protection from radiation, which can be easily used to operate at least because this natural covering will not require additional strengthening.
Can the asteroid…break?
Despite the benefits of mining on asteroids, the person may face certain dangers accompanying this highly unusual process. The fact is that because of the most insignificant error, the entire mission can easily be lost. So, if the result of the actions of the astronauts and the asteroid will not be able to rotate around its axis, then researchers will have to return to Earth. The same thing they have to do in the case that the space rock will not sustain active development of the metals and just… burst!
Well, in any case, scientists still have time to think through all possible scenarios of development of events and to prevent them: according to calculations, a full flight to win the first space rock can only happen in 20 years.
