At the bottom of the lake, found the remains of the old flowers that survived the dinosaurs

Every year, scientists excavated thousands of remains of ancient animals and plants, but do not have time to study them and sent to storage in the next few museums. However, these discoveries sooner or later fall into the hands of researchers who make amazing discoveries. So, in one of the museums of Germany, were found the fossilized remains of the oldest lilies — the flower that originally grew in the tropics, and during the reign of Peter I appeared in Russia. The discovery has surprised the scientists, because the flower was found well preserved even despite the fact that survived the fall killed the dinosaurs a meteorite.

The remains of an old Lily were found at the bottom of the former lake of Crato, located in the North-East of Brazil. She grew up there around 115 million years ago, and its length was almost 40 inches. Until now, scientists have known more than 110 species of lilies, but found the plant was attributed to a completely new kind, which was given the title Cratolirion bognerianum.

Ancient plants at the bottom of the lake

To the surprise of scientists, the plant is very well preserved. The photos can be good to distinguish the flower, narrow leaves, and roots. The plant is stiffened up to the cellular level, so scientists were able to see even the tiniest veins — tubes through which the plant receives water and nutrients from the soil.

To better see the structure of the flower, the researchers used computed tomography. After the plant is through a special device, researchers layer by layer examined the insides of ancient finds. A tomographic picture can be seen below: the leaves of the plant are marked in dark green, pistils are highlighted in light green and the petals are orange color.

Where first flowers have appeared?

Previously on the site of an ancient lake, Brazil has found other plants like water lilies and the progenitor of the modern pepper. On this basis it is considered that this area once grew a huge variety of plants. Scientists have raised the hypothesis that all flowering plants originated in tropical areas of the planet, the tropics, and only then spread throughout the Land.

The ancient Lily is not the only discovery, which for several years was in the Museum and did not attract the attention of scientists. The remains of ancient hyenas, for example, have lain in a Museum for over 50 years. But in vain — it turned out that this ancient predator lived on the territory of the Arctic cold, and much different from the modern relatives.
