NASA published a picture of the crash site of the lunar module “Bereshit”

In 2019, Israel was quite a bit to become the fourth country to successfully deliver private robotic station on the moon. Unfortunately, because of several challenges, the device is “Genesis” from SpaceIL fell on the surface of the satellite, and crashed. Recently, interplanetary station Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter managed to photograph the wreck of the camera — judging from the picture, due to the strong impact, its fragments scattered in different directions, and the moon formed a noticeable crater.

The picture was taken on April 22 with a 100-meter height, but published only now. For demonstration emerged after the collapse changes, NASA showed a photo of three years ago the same region of the moon. As can be seen, the so-called Sea of Tranquility after the fall of the object formed a bright spot with a dark crater in the middle, and the rays of length up to one hundred meters. Probably, the crater was formed during the destruction of the apparatus, rays from scattered fragments.

Judging by what’s left “tail”, the lunar spacecraft crashed into the surface at an angle of about 10 degrees. He was the little lander in history, and bore the six color cameras with 8-megapixel resolution, magnetometer, and corner reflectors. The module was equipped with a laser retroreflector array that could survive a crash — what it is and why you need it, you can read in our material.

Though “Genesis” and did not survive the landing, he still became the first private unit, successfully released in lunar orbit. It was created to participate in the competition Google Lunar XPRIZE, but could not get a cash prize to neither the search giant nor from the organization X Prize Foundation.
