Discovered a new species of centipede age 99 million years — why is this great discovery?

Thanks amber, inside which over millions of years of stored ancient insects, scientists still make important scientific discoveries. Recently, researchers from the Bulgarian National Museum of natural history, failed to examine a fragment of fossil resin, which preserved millipede from the order Callipodida. She was the oldest representative of his party and had a complex structure of the eye, so the researchers had to open a new branch of species of centipedes and make individual found his leader.

A piece of amber with a previously unknown arthropods were awarded to scientists by a private collector. The find was carefully studied using a microscope and computer scanner — the good, the ancient resin preserved even the smallest particles of millipedes. In the end, the researchers were able to create a three-dimensional image of an ancient being, its size is only 8.2 mm.

The centipede got a pretty long name Burmanopetalum expectatum that can be literally translated as “unexpected”. According to Professor Paul Stoeva, they really became a surprise that a new species cannot be attributed to any of the existing branches centipedes-Diplopoda. The fact that his visual apparatus is only five ommatidia, while other types are no less than thirty pieces. A new branch was named Burmanopetalidea.

Interestingly, millipedes their class Diplopoda have two pairs of legs on each body segment. This strongly distinguishes them from gubonogih that on each segment of their bodies have only one pair of limbs, and are mainly predators, the restraint of the victims of the first pair of nogocheljusti.

In ancient resin holds many interesting creatures that lived millions of years ago. They are perfectly preserved — for example, newly found spider even retained his ability to Shine through the eyes.
