3D laser printer to print the “bricks” will be sent to the moon

Today almost all the space agencies and private companies plan to build a station on the moon, but there is a problem on the satellite of our planet has no building materials. They can be delivered from Land, but according to researchers from the nonprofit Institute Laser Zentrum Hannover, transportation of one kilogram of building materials will cost the company in 782 000$. To prevent costs, they proposed to create the building blocks from lunar regolith using laser 3D printer called Moonrise.

It is known that 3-pound camera Moonrise was created over nine months and it the laser and optical system even longer. He is still in the experimental stage, but the creators plan to send him to the moon in 2021. It will be installed on Lunokhod PTScientists to start which will be used by the carrier rocket “Ariane-64”.

3D printer will print the bricks for lunar base

The developers of the 3D printer, shared that at the moment they do the correct setting of the laser. They also have to carefully work on the protection of the device — it is important to make sure that he survived as the fall to the lunar surface and changes temperatures.

To test the device in terrestrial conditions, researchers will also have to develop material, as similar to the lunar regolith. During testing, the 3D printer will attempt to melt it and create “bricks” of different shapes. After arriving on the moon in 2021, he will do the same, but in addition will remove the process and the results on the camera with high resolution.

Rover PTScientists mentioned in one of our materials — the European space Agency ESA intends to use it for the extraction of lunar soil in 2025. It is considered that the contained water may be useful in long-term space missions.
