Company Hybrid Air Vehicles known as the Creator of the world’s largest airship Airlander 10, the prototype of which was discontinued at the beginning of 2019. It happened because of too high cost and the willingness of the manufacturer to develop a production model for performing not only military but also civilian tasks. Recently, the company finally received a grant in the amount of $ 1.4 million and announced that the final version of a huge airship will be fully electric and safe for the environment.
The money was provided by the company Collins Aerospace and the University of Nottingham to create a fully electric propulsion power of 500 kW. The rejection diesel propulsion will be the first step to the creation of the electric giant. Due to its aerodynamic properties and a large amount of helium, a new version of the Airlander 10 will consume much less energy than similar machine with the same capacity.
According to the CEO of Hybrid Air Vechies Stephen Mcglennan, the project will move the world closer to an important goal — the creation of aircraft with zero carbon emissions. On the development of electric airship can take many, many years, but someday it will be suitable to perform wide range of tasks. For example, it can be used to monitor specific regions, travel and transportation.
A prototype of the Airlander 10 at the time, made six test flights, two of which ended in accidents. The company has treated them with ease, saying that they are experiencing a new type of aircraft, and during the development of these types of incidents may occur.
