For example, researchers from the American chemical community has managed to create liquid metal that can be manipulated using a magnetic field. This can be considered a small but important step, because this is the first case when the material is managed to move not only horizontally, but also vertically.
If in the future will be created and liquid robots, then surely they will be made of gallium or other metals that melt at room temperature. In addition to this property, they have other features like high conductivity and infinite flexibility. Liquid metal can be moved by means of magnets, but be sure that the alloy was added particles of Nickel or iron.
Unfortunately, due to the high surface tension of magnetized liquid metal can move only horizontally and only within a liquid. But researchers have found a way to move them even vertically. They reduced the tension, creating a liquid alloy of gallium, iron, indium, and tin — immersion in hydrochloric acid on the material surface was formed a layer of gallium oxide, which affected the surface tension.
Attaching a magnet to the opposite sides, the researchers ensured that the material was stretched vertically. This means that they can be moved even in three-dimensional space, not only in the plane as before. The new alloy is not yet ready for use in liquid robots, scientists are still far.
