In nature there are special type of creatures called extremophiles. They differ from all other animals that can survive in extreme conditions, for example, in extremely hot places, or very salty waters. Scientists have discovered that in the world there are also creatures that almost don’t need oxygen — oddly enough, this is some species of fish found in the Gulf of California members of the research Institute MBARI. Scientists still can’t understand how they can live without oxygen, but they have some assumptions.
Water, which has been found particularly tenacious fish contained significantly less oxygen than required for other aquatic life. Previously it was thought that fish are not able to live in the “dead water” because oxygen plays an important role in their metabolism. Apparently, discovered the underwater world body is built completely different.

Also, it is believed that they have a slow metabolism, associated with their small bodies — their length does not exceed 30 cm, so compared to them, their gills seem huge.
Each species of extremophiles has its own name, for example, animals with a moderate tolerance to high temperatures are called hyperthermophiles, and the inhabitants especially salt water — halophila. Organisms, whose life is practically not dependent on the presence of oxygen was found for the first time and they don’t yet have a name for them. At the moment they want to call them lipooxygenase, which translated from Latin means “small fans of oxygen”.
