Plastic waste is a very important problem for the ecology of our planet. Take at least the Great Pacific garbage patch, the problem with that is I can’t decide. Now there is no dearth of projects for the production of biodegradable plastic, but they are huge potential benefits are and different: often when you create safe for the nature of the plastic produced hazardous waste or depleting natural resources. But, it seems, a group of scientists from Israel has figured out how to solve this problem.
New technology for sustainable production of biopolymers belongs to researchers from tel Aviv University. Scientists have developed a way of creation of plastic which does not require land, fresh water or expensive chemical resources industry. Then how did they do it?
Writes EurekAlert! with reference to the journal Bioresource Technology, it’s all in the use of marine micro-organisms that feed on multicellular algae. Simply put, the sea plankton. A waste product which is the substrate for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates — cheap substances for the production of plastic which is decomposed in soil in just 2 years.
“Conventional plastic decompose for hundreds of years. Thus, bottles, packaging and bags create plastic continents in the oceans, which endanger animals and pollute the environment. Moreover, plastic is made from petroleum products, and the industrial process is accompanied by the release of hazardous chemicals.” said lead author Alexander Goldberg.
In order to create a biodegradable plastic, according to scientists, it is necessary not so much: marine microorganisms and algae. And the whole reaction occurs in salt water.
“We already have factories that can produce a new kind of bioplastic on a commercial scale, but they use plants that require agricultural land and fresh water. Just need to convert them to work with a new kind of raw materials.”
