Climate change will turn all sea turtles into females

Gender of sea turtles depends on the temperature of the sand at the place of instillation of eggs. If the sand was warm, the eggs will hatch female, and if the cold male. This relationship seems very interesting, however, scientists have discovered a great danger — if the Earth’s temperature will continue to rise, all sea turtles will be female. The future of the turtles depends on the mating of males and females, so that they may be on the verge of extinction.

The study, which allowed to know in advance about the danger of extinction of sea turtles, published in the journal “Biology of global change”. In the framework of the scientists tried to find out what will be the life of sea turtles in the context of global warming. The subject of research became the marine national Park Pailan in West Africa.

The researchers announced that the worst-case scenario of global warming over 90% of sea turtles in this region are female. Even if people minimize the amount of harmful emissions and reduce the greenhouse effect, in 20 years, the proportion of female sea turtles will make an impressive 80%.

Fortunately, the main author of the study named Ana Rita Patricio is good news. She recalled that sea turtles always have a choice where to lay their eggs. If they will nest on the sun-baked sand, of them, of course, will hatch females. But if there are those who are smart enough to lay eggs in the shade of trees, the possibility of the hatching of males is greatly increased.

The researchers believe this is as effective, but not very humane experience. They put temperature sensors at different nests, and then broke 5 eggs in each to know the sex of the cubs. Indeed, in cold nests were much more males than females.

The increase in the number of female species of sea turtles — this is not news. Previously, scientists found that the population of Pacific green sea turtle Great Barrier reef in the last 20 years is almost entirely composed of females.
